Bike riding – A survival tactic for ADULTING.

Adulting – What does that nonsense even mean??  It certainly means something different to everyone – and has varying levels of weight attached to it.  Most people use the term ‘adulting’ to imply that it sucks (their life, their job) or at least comes wrapped in a package of mortgages, car payments, health insurance, and responsibilities until one day your head explodes.  (yes, unless you find some survival tactics – your head will explode)

And here is where bike riding comes in.

  1. You can’t be on your phone while riding a bike
  2. It’s simply a carefree activity
  3. You’re going somewhere – it’s a mini adventure
  4. The breeze /sun on your face
  5. Stop for ice cream #yum
  6. You’re getting healthy #endorphines
  7. It clears your head
  8. It is friggin’ FUN

Things that you do that take you out into the world and away from your phone, your anxiety, your stresses – A bit of a break from your life will help you rest your mind and realize it’s all manageable – the ‘adulting’ stuff.  It really is.  You actually kinda like your job (sure, Bob’s an idiot but he’s close to retiring – sad sap) You love your home – health insurance is a racket (that’s a different post)… but you get where I’m going with this.

Find YOUR fun.

Find the thing that takes you away from it all for an hour – that gives your mind the time to rest – it will help it become more efficient at processing and having perspective.

I just stumbled onto riding bikes because I was desperate for an awesome Bday gift for my husband.  I spotted these super cool locally made Bikes and thought – why not.  That’s fun.   Little did I realize – he wasn’t going to go for bike rides alone – so not long after he bought me a bike (that I’m obsessed with) and it WASN’T EVEN MY BIRTHDAY #score!!

And there you have it – this is what works for me among other things – that takes me back to a simpler time (being a kid) – when ‘play’ was a part of my everyday.  But this might not work for you.  Maybe it’s playing basketball or tennis or dancing, just seeing friends, cooking, heading to a museum or a movie, reading, writing, going for a walk.  It’s your mission to find some tactics.

Now – even when traveling – I am always on the lookout for an opportunity to ride bikes – and fortunately, most cities have bike sharing (like Citi Bikes) in place.

Find your fun (for you) and do that as much as possible.
